Firewall Automation and Network Change Management
Processing thousands of firewall rules in minutes, not months
A global insurance company needed to process a rapidly growing volume of firewall changes during a major data center migration. Ahead Consulting designed and implemented a custom automation solution that increased processing speed, improved accuracy, and prevented an estimated six-month project delay.
Results at a glance
- 2,000+ firewall rules processed per minute
- Engineering effort reduced from 316 man-days to less than one
- Accuracy improved from 90% to more than 99%
- More than $3 million USD in first-year savings
- An estimated six-month migration delay avoided
The challenge
The client’s network engineering team was responsible for reviewing and implementing a growing number of firewall rule changes each week. These changes supported several infrastructure initiatives, including a major data center migration.
Every rule was entered and verified manually. As volumes increased, the process required substantial engineering time and carried an increasing risk of input errors. Slow firewall processing was also affecting the broader migration schedule.
Without a more efficient approach, the firewall work was projected to delay the data center migration by approximately six months, creating substantial financial and operational risk.
Our approach
Ahead Consulting reviewed the existing firewall change process, including its workflows, timelines, and error patterns. The analysis established that a custom automation platform would provide the most effective way to increase capacity while maintaining accuracy and security controls.
We designed and implemented a solution capable of:
- Processing large volumes of firewall rule changes in bulk
- Automatically validating rule structure and accuracy
- Reducing the manual workload placed on network engineers
- Supporting delivery within critical project timelines
- Integrating with the client’s existing operational workflows
The solution
The new platform replaced individual rule entry and verification with a bulk-processing workflow. Engineers could submit firewall changes at scale, with the system automatically validating the data and preparing it for deployment.
The solution was introduced during the data center migration, allowing the network team to process firewall changes quickly enough to maintain the infrastructure deployment schedule.
The outcome
Processing capacity increased from approximately 800 firewall rules per man-day to more than 2,000 rules per minute. Work that had been expected to require 316 man-days was reduced to less than one day, while accuracy improved from 90% to more than 99%.
The solution generated more than $3 million USD in first-year savings and prevented an estimated six-month delay to the data center migration. Engineers previously assigned to manual firewall processing could also be reassigned to other critical project work.
Client feedback
“It’s phenomenal to see the Japan Network Team setting the example for the organization. The entire Network Team looks forward to embedding this capability around the globe.”
